The Atlanta Hawks have enjoyed a long and storied history in the National Basketball Association (NBA), starting out as one of the NBA's original 17 teams when it was formed in 1949. The Hawks originally began play as the Buffalo Bisons, joining the National Basketball League in 1946. The team's original owner, Ben Kerner, moved the Hawks to Moline, Illinois just 13 games into its inaugural season, becoming the Tri-Cities Hawks. Atlanta Hawks tickets became hot sellers just three years later, when in 1949, the National Basketball League merged with the Basketball Association of America to form the new National Basketball Association (NBA).

In 1968, the Hawks were sold to real estate developer Tom Cousins, who promptly moved the team to Atlanta, its current home. While the franchise has yet to win another NBA championship, the Hawks have won four division championships during its time in Atlanta, and management continues to work to field competitive teams in search of its next NBA championship.

In 1982, the Hawks pulled off one of the most lopsided trades in NBA history, acquiring star Dominique Wilkins from the Utah Jazz. Wilkins would go on to become one of the most celebrated basketball stars in NBA history, winning the NBA Slam Dunk contest twice during his career and leading the Hawks into the playoffs with four consecutive 50-win seasons during the mid-1980s.
